A guide to checking care Follow-up desk

Find out who handles the next question

A plan needs a clear way back to a person. Ask how questions, new concerns and results reach the clinician after the visit.

The question to open with

Before the visit ends, ask who will handle the next step. Write down how you send a question and how the service tells you who will answer.

Ask for the response process in plain words. A message box alone does not explain who reviews a concern.

Who reviews a new concern, and how do I reach that person?

Keep the response plan beside the treatment discussion.

Ask who receives a question and how

A later question

The medical boards’ federation issued guidance in May 2026 calling for patients to have a way to reach their clinician with later questions.

Ask how that happens and whether there is another fee.

A result that changes the plan

Ask who reads a test result, who explains it and who arranges the next visit or referral.

A possible product problem

Patients can report a medical-product problem to the FDA, the US medicine regulator, through its free MedWatch program.

Sending a problem report to the FDA does not establish that the product was responsible.

Knowing the next person and the next step makes the plan easier to use.

Keep the information easy to find

Ask which details the clinician would want if a concern develops. Keep the visit notes and any product paperwork together.

Severe symptoms such as breathing trouble or tongue swelling call for emergency care, according to MedlinePlus.

For other concerns, use the response plan discussed with your clinician and ask when an examination in person is needed.
